29/06/2006 From Aberdeen to Aberdare
That was so cool!
Aberdeen was the best I ever felt on a first night and it just got better from there. By the time i played Aberdare I felt like I was really exploring the songs and enjoying the whole process of interacting with the audience.
Thank you all for coming out and making it such a great trip.
Thank you also to all the great singer-songwriters who opened for me along the way and set the tone for some of my best gigs.
Also Ian, Mark, Annette, Martha, Pip, Sean and Roy thank you for being such lovely road buddies.
I’m really sad it’s over. Here’s to next time!
26/05/2006 The Green Bag
The green bag came back from Aberdeen!
We had a mishap in Worcester because of the temporary stands - but my trusty Freshman 12 bounced and survived. Love that professional attitude! No ‘Rock God’ that night, though.
It’s lovely to see the guitars re-united with their buddies, cradled in the arms of their rightful supporters. We nearly cried. Thanks Kate!
Stoke was great. The audience were standing and singing every word. And in silky, mellifluous tones.
Keen clappers, too. My kind of town.
Ian Faddie was called off on emergency Zero 7 stuff and Mark Blagden and Annette Guilfoyle have stepped into the breach... Good to see Mark again, and don’t have to tune my own guitars now, so the the glory’s all mine and the blame his...
Annette did sound for the Go - Betweens for a long time, so not only does she understand the dynamics of us quirky, picky strummers, but swopping our Go-bee’s stories in the hotel bar is a lovely way to end the day.
I’m typing this (Is that right? Do people still type?) in the bowels of the Liverpool Academy (right word that time) and looking forward to getting on. The dying strains of Isobel Heyworth’s lovely set drifting down from above, and great memories of the last time I played here.
Beatles, Bunnymen, Teardrops...
Where’s the PG Tips? I feel a song coming on...
16/05/2006 Update
The start of the tour has been overshadowed by the very sad news of Grant Mclennan's death. Grant was a friend from way back and a genius songwriter. Along with Robert Forster and the other Go Betweens, he has created a beautiful body of work.
My favourite line is from The Wrong Road, where he says
"When the rain hit the roof
With the sound of a finished kiss
Like when a lip lifts from a lip
I took the Wrong Road round"
Here's to you, Grant.
Travelling to Cambridge now and thought I’d say hi and thank you good people who came out to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Derby.
Aberdeen was like a ‘last night of the tour’ gig. I just felt like staying on all night, playing whatever came to mind.. We even managed to leave my bag of bits behind (nothing important - stands, leads, sets, capos, tuners, strings, tools...) and still haven’t got it back!
(By the way,If you live in Aberdeen and you’re reading this, could you please go round there and red star the thing down or something?)
Very complimentary reviews for the Ediburgh show in both The Scotsman and The Herald.
And then we headed south and basked in the warm hospitality of the Sheffield and Derby audiences.
For some reason Derby was a very ‘musical’ gig for me. I’ve never been more in the moment or into the songs. Thank you.
Now approaching Cambridge and wondering what’s in store. Martha Tilston’s back on board and it’s almost like old times.

02/02/2006 Album finished!
We finished the new album at 6AM on 5th January. It sounds good to me. Working with Jeremy Stacey again was a great experience.
It'll be out on Redemption Records in the UK in mid April, with a May / June tour to be anounced next week.
Also next week, the "Live At Ronnie Scott's" CD will be available from this very site - you can hear the version of 'Over You' from that night by clicking on the right.
Also, I played a gig at The Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, which, as you can imagine, was a great night for me. Thank you to everyone who came.
Finally, to celebrate my birthday last week I went to see top notch comedian Jeff Green. He didn't disappoint!
More news next week...

14/12/2005 Lucia service
Sometimes when I tell the story behind the song “Black Lucia’ I see the audience look slightly baffled – this clip may confuse matters further.
My friend Zena kindly took us to see the Lucia Day (13th Dec) service at the Swedish Church in Marylebone.
It was beautiful.
10/12/2005 I remember it like it was yesterday (or was it the day before?)
Craig Gannon was in London yesterday and dropped by the studio.
It was great to see him again and get his input on some vocal harmony ideas – no such thing as a free lunch on these sessions.
Craig was the original “other” guitarist in Aztec Camera. He joined when he was sixteen and I was nineteen (1983) and we were soon trundling across America on our first US tour. We opened for Elvis Costello (who was so kind to us) for about 10 weeks, coast to coast and then did our own tour.
It was a real character forming experience. Probably a bit like joining the Navy.
Funny thing is, as we reminisced, it became clear that although we remembered all the same events, we’d each filled in the details so differently over the years.
He even convinced me for a minute that I’d been to Las Vegas. I mean, you’d remember that, right?
It’s unsettling to think that some of your fondest memories may be mostly fabrication.
Craig being at this session felt just right. He was full of praise for the new tracks and said their looseness and warmth reminded him of the old days.
For what that’s worth…
27/11/2005 Writing
Jonathan at Complete sent me the new Sire box-set. Aztec Camera are on it. Now can't stop listening to The Flamin' Groovies, Richard Hell, The Saints etc. Dug out "The Kid With The Replaceable Head" again, too.
Finishing up my songs before Jeremy Stacey (co-producer) returns to Blighty this week – so this web entry suddenly became pressingly urgent…
We've been working in Chelsea, in short bursts and the new record's more than half done.
All analogue - 24 track 2 inch tape, etc. I'm used to the 'one take' thing again - 'Surf' was recorded like that, but since we have double bass (Mark Neary) and drums in the same room on some songs, everyone has to be happy with their performance, so it feels exciting.
By the way, I read this book on the tour. Made me laugh, anyway…
17/11/2005 The Sea Is Wide
Martha Tilston shot the opening number at the Southport gig on a tiny camera with no zoom - I admire her patience.
The Sea Is Wide was written as a B-Side a few years back and it was great to play it live and get such a good response. Like a little underdog song whose day had come.
Tickets are now officially on sale for the Glasgow 21st January gig at...
www.celticconnections.com/celtic/index.cfm?&pid=600&EvNum=43045 13/11/2005 Tour finished
Just finished our little UK tour. Had a great last night in Southport on Friday. The audience were outstanding and the show ended with a huge singalong (see pic ) I’d definitely go and see them again.
Very sad our little jaunt is over. We played some weird and wonderful venues and it was great to meet a few of you along the way. Thank you so much to everyone who came along. Thanks, also, to Ian and Martha without whom it would’ve been very much duller. And quieter.
The next gig is at Glasgow Old Fruitmarket on Saturday 21st of January 06 as part of the Celtic Connections festival. I’ve played there before and I know it’ll be a great night.
By the way… killermontstreet.com is everything this page isn’t. Michael Gallagher still diligently presides over the world’s biggest archive of AC / RF info, mp3s, tabs, lyrics etc so that’s where all the stuff is!
